Saving money on text messaging

August 8th, 2008 at 08:26 am

I've just discovered something small, but nifty. I work as a lecturer, and many students text me. I guess that's the culture in my university and it's somehow encouraged. However texting back and forth with students, plural, is gonna cost. I discovered a few days ago that my cell phone provider has a website that allows me to text people, who are using the same service provider, for free! There is a limit of 3 text messages per day, however. That's $0.15 saved per day.

In my country, we have a saying: a little soil at a time makes a hill one day.

I am also a lecturer based in Boston and I have found that I can text my students for free by using email. I ask each student at the beginning of term for their cell phone number and carrier. Each carrier has a different email address for texting. For example to text 6175294123 at Verizon, I would send an email to 6175294123@vtext.com. I have gone a step further by automatically texting students with attendance or assignment problems using Excel and Word mailmerge, and sending to email rather than the printer.

Interesting phenomenon. Texting drives me batty unless it's at least with a thumb keyboard. And even then, I still prefer email. Push email is also available, but then, perhaps this is a sign that I'm starting to get behind the times.

My husband is paying .20 incoming and outgoing. That's an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing.

I love text messaging! I have an unlimited data and text plan phone plan for only 32 dollars per month. Prior to text messaging, I have always used push emails. The problem with push emails that often there is a delay in timing for it to arrive to the intended person while text messages are usually instant.

I was thinking about dropping my 300 text messages for $5.99 plan, which for $.15 a piece (the price without the plan) takes 40 texts a month before it pays off. I didn't think I used text messaging that much, but for the past 4 months, it has been in the 70-80 range per month (I use it as my pager when I am on call...using the email address trick that Jonathan mentioned above). Wish that there was a "150 for $2.50 plan" or something.

Hi there everyone. Thanks for the comments. I hate texting too, but it's a necessary evil. No, the school doesn't reimburse me. Push email's a good idea, and I should shepherd students towards it. However, students seem to prefer texting - probably thinking that the lecturer will entertain queries at all hours.

Jonathan's idea is GREAT. I'll check to see if my carrier allows me to do that.
